MEDIHEAL Capsule 100 Bio Seconderm Clear Hyaluronic Acid Sheet Mask Review

Mediheal has a reputation for producing really amazing sheet masks. I was drawn to this mask because it’s a 2 step mask with ampoule—similar to a serum but more concentrated for a specific skin concern. It’s undeniable that it looks really cool!

Originally, I thought that you should pop the capsule for the liquid to pour down into the mask but after some help from a friend(the instructions are only in Korean)my mistake was avoided. Phew! It’s a 2 step process of a sheet mask followed by hyaluronic acid ampoule.

Every second 5 Mediheal sheet masks are sold in the world. Those statistics make Mediheal Korea’s number 1 mask brand, in 2018. The South Korean company  categorizes itself as a “beauty science” company and even automated the mask construction process to ensure sterility.

From one mask lover to another, I know you’re not easily seduced by numbers and facts about sterility. You want results, right? Well, this mask aims to brighten, improve skin-elasticity, moisturize, purify, cool and soothe skin.

This mask claims to reduce the skins temperature by 4.7 degrees celsius, with a clinical study confirming this statement. Hyaluronic acid in the mask targets dry skin to moisturize and brighten! Witch hazel and tea tree extract, which are common in acne clearing products, target excess sebum.

Purifying ingredients, willow bark and salicylic acid are combined with soothing ingredients borage tree extract, chamomile flower and centella asiatica extract to help your dreary face. Don’t worry! You won’t look dreary once you’ve used your mask!

For those worried about wrinkles, evening primrose extract is a notable ingredient used in this mask. As advised from a Youtube video by the legendary beauty guru Michelle Phan, it’s better to prevent wrinkles than try to erase wrinkles.

  1. Cleanse, exfoliate and tone to prep your skin before masking.
  2. Remove the mask from the mesh sheets(there’s 2 so be careful that both are removed before applying the mask to your face!)
  3. Leave on for 40 minutes(Yes, much longer than a usual face mask)
  4. Remove the mask and gently pat excess serum into your skin.
  5. Apply the capsule hyaluronic acid(step 2)to your face and you’re finished!

Luckily, my skin type is normal with minor pimple problems on my chin and T-zone. No complaints—there are worse things happening in the world after all. When I took the mask out of the packaging I noticed a slight alcohol fragrance.

Although most skincare reviewers advise strongly against fragrance, personally I like nice smelling skincare products. It is not ideal for the skin. Yes, I’ve heard that but I ignorantly like what I like. I don’t like this alcohol smell though.

The fit was bad when I first wore the sheet mask. It was falling off my chin, not sticking to my mouth and was too large around my nose area. Something was strange. Suddenly, I realized that I hadn’t removed the sly, second mesh protective cover. It was very thin so it was hidden very well. Really!

Immediately the 2mm bio-cellulose, made by the process of fermenting natural coconut juice, tightly hugged my skin. It felt minutely rubber like and for some strange reason, I imagined it was how it would feel if a sheet mask was made from an octopuses sucker.

I relaxed in my mask while watching 90 Day Fiance. Such an addicting show and if you haven’t watched it before, you really should! I did notice a cooling effect from this mask so I don’t think the cooling claims are bullshit. Also, this was before the text was translated for me.

My friend hadn’t texted me back the ‘directions’ translation yet so I assumed 20 minutes was the time limit for this mask. Most sheet masks recommend that they’re left on for 15 to 20 minutes and leaving on sheet masks for too long is a no-no! Don’t do that please.

You are meant to leave this mask on for 40 minutes, according to the directions. This is rare in the masking world but if you want to unwind and appreciate your mask thoroughly, it’s a neat pick!

Removing the mask, my face looked brighter but the results were not astonishing. Maybe my expectations were too high or I compared this mask to others I’ve used, but the difference was not mind-blowing. Looking back, if I left the mask on for an extra 20 minutes, my results might have been more fabulous. Maybe.

Is it the most fabulous result in the world? I’m not convinced… Photo Credit: Ash Potter

The hyaluronic acid capsule was difficult to open but there was plentiful of product! Fantastic abundance! I massaged the liquid onto my face and down onto my neck(the hyaluronic acid, of course!) I felt and looked so fresh! My skin looked fantastic.

I really wish I could end the review here and adore this mask but 40 minutes later, a ‘scum-esque’ consistency appeared as a top layer on my skin. We’ve all used that cream that’s left a weird layer to pick at, right? It’s nasty!

So, the sheet mask was mediocre, my skin did look regal but then the hyaluronic acid left a layer of scum on my face. It’s not terrible but I’m not alone in my opinion since other reviews have felt a similar ‘meh’ conclusion with this product. Mediheal may be a trusted, cult brand but The Mediheal Capsule 100 Bio Seconderm Clear Hyaluronic Acid Sheet Mask only receives 3 out of 5.
